Community Care Behavioral Health Organization Recruits Regional Director for the North Central HealthChoices Program

PITTSBURGH (January 4, 2007) -- Bradley Stein, the Senior Director for Research, Evaluation and Outcomes at Community Care Behavioral Health Organization, is the 2006 recipient of the Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Service Program Award for Excellence from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Stein accepted the award in recognition of his outstanding work with the Cognitive- Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS) Program.

The CBITS program evolved in response to school official requests for an effective intervention for students who are exposed to violence. The resulting program integrates current empirical knowledge of effective treatment for students with substantial symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder with the practical aspects of delivering a program in schools by school –based clinicians. The CBITS program, evaluated in a randomized study, has resulted in clinically and statistically significant improvement in symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression, as well as significantly improved child functioning by parent report.

The Norbert and Charlotte Rieger Service Program Award for Excellence was established in 1996 to recognize innovative programs that address prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of mental illnesses in children and adolescents, and serve as model programs to the community. The Award honors Dr. Stein’s work with academic and community collaborators from the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the RAND Corporation and the University of California, Los Angeles in the development, implementation, evaluation, and dissemination of the Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Trauma in Schools (CBITS).

In addition to his role at Community Care, Dr. Stein is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and a health services and policy researcher at the RAND Corporation.
