Preventive Health Program UpdateCommunity Care maintains two Preventive Health Programs for members.
The programs began in Allegheny County in July 2001, in York, Adams and Berks Counties in November 2003 and in Chester County in November 2004. Additionally, the programs began in the North Central region in January 2008. The Preventive Health Programs are educational programs and are identified as secondary prevention programs. They are designed to help members and their families to learn more about the illnesses they face. As part of the programs, Community Care sends a series of three free educational newsletters to adult members recently diagnosed with depression and to parents or guardians of child members recently diagnosed with ADHD or members expressing an interest in learning more about these conditions. The newsletters are designed to help members learn more about these conditions and what they can do to help themselves or their children. Members and parents or guardians can opt out of or into the programs at any time by calling the toll free Preventive Health phone line at 1-866-639-2943. Members who participate in the programs may receive a call from Community Care to ask them how helpful the newsletters were to them. Participation in the depression program averaged 93% across the counties. The majority of members surveyed reported that the newsletters were useful and that they felt more informed about depression after receiving them. Participation in the ADHD program averaged 92% across the counties. The majority of parents and guardians who were surveyed reported having less stress after receiving the newsletters and being more informed about ADHD medications after receiving the Medication Fact Sheet. Community Care developed this fact sheet as a response to parent and guardian requests for more information related to medications. The fact sheet is an insert in Issue One of the ADHD Newsletters. The fact sheet gives parents/guardians more information about the medications used for ADHD, some of the common side effects, and answers some commonly asked questions about treatment with medications. Additionally, in October 2006 we began to include an insert in each newsletter of the depression program specific to depression in older adults. The inserts contain information such as symptoms of depression, treatment for depression and recovery from depression. Community Care is pleased with the results of the Preventive Health Programs and the progress that is being made. We encourage you to support the use of these programs and to refer any member who may benefit from receiving the educational newsletters. You can access the materials on Community Care’s website at www.ccbh.com. If you would like more information or the materials mailed to you, call the Preventive Health Phone Line at 1-866-639-2943. |
