New Technologies in Behavioral Health Care

UPMC Health Plan Behavioral Health Services regularly reviews requests for coverage for new behavioral health care technologies and new applications of existing technologies. UPMC Health Plan Behavioral Health Services reviews such requests to ensure that the benefits we offer reflect new developments in the treatment for behavioral health disorders and that members have access to available safe and effective treatment options. Requests can be initiated by a UPMC for Life member or by a practitioner by contacting UPMC Health Plan Behavioral Health Services at 1-888-251-0083 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (TTY Line: 1-877-877-3580).

All requests are forwarded to UPMC Health Plan Behavioral Health Services’ Medical Director. A committee appointed by the Medical Director will review the request and determine if a recommendation for coverage for the new technology should be presented to UPMC for Life for consideration. The Medical Director and committee will review existing research and ensure that certain criteria are met, such as the safety of the technology and demonstrated benefits of the technology. Results of any recommendations are presented to UPMC Health Plan Behavioral Health Services' quality oversight committee, prior to and following the review by UPMC for Life’s Technology Assessment Committee.
